“Guy’s book Le désir...

Guy Hocquenghem: One of Us

“Guy’s book Le désir homosexuel had just been published in 1972, and The Screwball Asses addresses some of the same issues, but its style is closer to a récit or narration than a book: personalistic, free-flowing; twelve short, untitled but numbered chapters, each introduced with an epigraph like the one at the beginning of this review. Guy’s text is a provocative, pithy, kaleidoscopic, aphoristic critique — and self-critique — of the ways homosexual desire is deformed by phallocratic capitalism and a leftist practice that reproduces heterosexist and bourgeois mores. It critiques the delusions of the newly emergent gay liberation movement and might even be viewed as a predictor of the neoliberal identity politics of assimilation and “homonormativity” embraced by most of the gay movement three decades later. His critique is filtered through Lacanian, Freudian, Deleuzian, and Saussurean lenses that are more developed in Homosexual Desire and succinctly explained by Jeffrey Weeks in his preface to the English translation (1978):

… the aim is to find unalienated forms of radical social action, and these cannot be traditional centralized structures (especially of the working class), because these, too, are complicit with capitalism. The model of alternative modes was provided by the spontaneous forms of activity developed in France in 1968, “fusions of desire” which escape the imprisoning force of the “normal”. Schizoanalysis provides the alternative: the schizophrenic is not revolutionary, but the schizophrenic process is the potential of revolution, and only in the activity of autonomous, spontaneous groupings, outside the social order, can revolution be achieved. The result, which is central to Hocquenghem’s project, is a worship of the excluded and marginal as the real material of social transformation.1

In dissecting the homosexual’s location in a capitalist society that reproduces its norms of consumption and fetishization, as well as alienation, even in sexual rebels, thereby fracturing a polymorphous or nondifferentiated sexual desire, Guy’s text anticipates the extreme forms of role playing and marketing that emerged a few years later with the clone and its myriad colored hankies and accoutrements:

Yes, we copy normal relations, we either occupy the place of the subject or that of the object, but we copy them in any case. Today’s homosexual does not embody polymorphic desire: he moves univocally beneath an equivocal mask. His sexual objects have already been chosen by social or political machination, and they are always the same: either weaker or stronger, older or younger, more in love with him or he more in love with them, more bourgeois or more proletarian, primitive or intellectualized, uber-male or sub-male, black or white, Arab or Viking, top or bottom, and so forth. Politics has already done its underground work. If, to boot, consciousness gets involved in political struggle, then the heterosexual and exogamic tendencies of today’s homosexuality will become a caricature, and we will see more and more cases where a dick can only make love to a head and a head to a dick. (17)

In present-day unfree society, homosexuality (like heterosexuality) is channeled, controlled by the dominant capitalist-heterosexist mode. If this was true in 1973, it is even more true today, when the gay agenda is less a challenge to the dominant society than a plea for acceptance into it, when it is marketed with the alphabet soup “LGBT” brand, when minority forms of homosexuality have been marginalized (SM) or anathematized (pederasty and pedophilia) and accommodating forms promoted (religion, marriage), when militarism and patriotism masquerade as liberation and homonormativity reigns. Even as it struggles to free itself, homosexuality remains trapped:

More often than not, we homosexuals are not abnormal; rather, we have failed normalcy. We are as codified by the bourgeoisie as the latter has sexually codified workers by making them failed bourgeois. Rather than being lovers in order to breathe, we are queer [pédés] in order to escape asphyxia. Rather than pretending to be virtuous, we pretend to be dissolute. And if the self-management of desire turned out to be virtue, we would refuse it, already intimating discipline and obligation there. As long as we are not burned at the stake or locked up in asylums, we continue to flounder in the ghettoes of nightclubs, public restrooms and sidelong glances, as if that misery had become the habit of our happiness. And so, with the help of the state, do we build our own prison. (25)”

More here and here

After the recent spate of attacks on homosexuals in...

Hate in NYC

After the recent spate of attacks on homosexuals in New York City, a few thoughts on the media coverage of this story. For our purposes, the “facts” in this story, such as they are, are less interesting than the larger narrative that is told by the media. In this metanarrative, again and again, we see gay men (and other sexual minorities) as the innocent victims of horrid crime, the murder of Mark Carson in Greenwich Village as told in Queerty follows this pattern,

“Carson and his 31-year-old friend were dressed in tank tops and cut-off shorts with boots. Police say when they first were approached by the suspects, Morales and pals started hurling gay epithets at them, including “Look at these faggots” and “What are you, gay wrestlers?” Even when Carson and friend started walking away, the suspects chased after them shouting “faggot” and “queer.”

Kelly (the police commissioner) emphasized, “This fully looks to be a hate crime; a bias crime. There were no words that would aggravate the situation that were spoken by the victims. They did not know the confronter. There was no previous relationship.”

On one level, of course, this man and the others attacked are victims of a horrible crimes, but there’s more to this tale than that. This story, insofar as it goes, is built using the template for all “hate crimes” ever: innocent victim + deranged homophobe = gay martyr. Notice the “turn the other cheek” meme. The victims uttered no aggravating words to the Roman soldiers. What if they had? The Christological roots of this should be obvious to anyone who delves deeper than the surface of media narratives. The fact is, all stories, like water flowing in a river, find their way along a limited number of well worn beds. They write themselves, as the Hollywood hacks say. In fact, because the victims and perps are following a certain script, the stories often tell us, rather than the other way around. Before the literal minded and easily outraged start howling: this conversation does not “dishonour” or “demean” these aggrieved individuals and their kin, rather its an attempt to understand better what’s happening here, outside the cliches of the hike to Golgotha.

The man in this video is worth listening to in terms of how “victims” might transform themselves into “agents”. Malcolm X, at least at this time, rejected Martin Luther King’s view that African-Americans had spent “time on the cross”, and through their suffering and blood they could earn redemption through peaceful protest. Malcolm X, through the very warped prism of the Nation of Islam, picked up on the Muslims ideal of jihad, but in his version, only in self-defence. In the presentation above, recorded at Berkeley from 1963, Malcolm X famously advocates for violence, cleverly using the “kill that dog” to symbolically suggest the right of blacks to defend themselves against both police dogs and the police. Yes, people relentlessly beaten, exploited, raped and killed for three-hundred years DO have a right to self-defence, violent if necessary. Is that so radical? (It is interesting to note, both men ended up slain, both claimed as martyrs, but MLK inevitably being claimed by the useful role of Christ-figure.) Retelling the most egregious martyr stories, like the murder of Mark Carson, belies the deeper currents and tensions in the city and society where this happened.

The “victim story” is persistent, not just because it has deep pseudo-religious roots, but because it is politically useful, at least in the short term. A suffering people, whether its suffering comes from slavery, HIV/AIDS or hate crimes, gains political cache in the form of public sympathy. Again, for gaining rights, this may be an effective political strategy, but there are long-term cultural and psychological consequences for everyone that are insidious.

What to do? Stop dealing in gay victimology. The story of martyrs and suffering does not help people to live well, rather in puts them in the “slave mentality” Nietzsche warns about. This does not mean ignoring violence of all kinds, but looking deeper into its root causes. The fact is, the world we live in can be dangerous, and even more perilous if one is different in any way. These attacks happened in combustive atmosphere of an armed society with an undeclared class (and race) guerrilla war going on. (Yes, even in the Elysian Fields of Greenwich Village in the shadow of the Stonewall Inn.) Conflicts are not mainly about homophobia, but deeper currents, mainly class. Add to this the explosive nature of the psychology of groups and individuals around sexuality and the story begins to look multidimensional. If we begin to respect their complexity, these stories start to be less a football for the Cause (whatever that might be) and more a complex (albeit murderous) interaction built on the shifting plates of an unstable society in deep crisis. On a practical level: teach all homosexuals, in fact, all young people, self-defence. By that we do not mean carrying guns or always running away (that’s not always an option), but bey being able to spot trouble, defuse a situation or if necessary to act effectively to defend your life and property.

Again, the point here is not to dishonour individuals wounded or even murdered in violent acts, but to question the received ideas promulgated by gays about the meaning of these acts. A creative and lively discussion should follow so that we might transcend this “martyr story” and chose more different heroes.

Some of...

The Fag Hag Blues and the Misogyny of the Grindrellas

Some of the “highlights” of this lazy opinion piece from Vice (followed by a response): “Last year, I was in San Francisco with one of my best girlfriends and her gay friend, whom I had only met once or twice before. We were drinking at some house party, having an A-OK time, when all of a sudden her gay friend starts shouting to her, “You’re a fucking slut. Look at you, you slut-whore!”

This, I guess, was supposed to be “sassy” and “cute” but really it just made everyone in the room profoundly uncomfortable. He was drunk, too drunk, and his words felt like daggers. My girlfriend had no idea what to do so she just laughed it off and prayed it would stop.

It didn’t. He spent the whole night calling her horrible names before eventually passing out on the couch. “He does this sometimes,” my friend told me as we were making a run for it. “It’s mortifying and makes me feel like shit.”

Homo: this grim little anecdote seems to have as much to do with alcoholism, low self-esteem and codependency as it does with gay male misogyny. As Andy Warhol would say when presented with something banal, “so what?”. Let’s try to untangle the twisted little thesis, based on this recent meme in the gay lame stream press (Vice, you are usually half a cut better) that gay men are misogynists with women and one another.

Well, first off, of course we are. Get educated: If one grows up in a patriarchal society (and we all do, even Scandinavians), you imbibe misogyny, sometimes from your mother’s breast. So, despite best efforts, not just gay men, but men in general and many women are misogynists. The idea that women are “less than” is pernicious and not going away. This is not to say that oppression of women should not be combated, but to be shocked by it in gay men is naive or disingenuous.

Now, onto the fags and there vaunted hags. If you put two representatives of oppressed and despised groups together, do you expect champagne. lollipops and roses? Well, unfortunately, that’s what you DO get, but nothing more. These two people have been brought up in a society that hates fags and hates women, does it surprise anyone that they produce many negative projections, even to the point of mutually despising one another. In fact, often these relationships, despite the stereotype of happy “BFF” are not that at all. Neither party, fag or woman friend, are getting what they really want. This causes friction and tension. Talk about social construction: they are pushed together by the hetero-norm that a couple is a man and a woman. Sadly, many of these pseudo-couples comprise two people starving for sex and intimacy, both too afraid or muddled to go out and get what they really want, so they cling unhappily to one another. For our part, the best fag hags are gay men trapped in women’s bodies: Wolf women. We both know, at ten in the evening, after a nice dinner and raucous conversation, it’s time to say good-night and go find cock. We go hunting separately get what we want and then have a laugh over a coffee. Queens bringing their ladies to a party is grand, but to a gay cruise bar? worse yet to a sex club or dark room, so they can gawk at their boy’s sexual quirks? Giggling girls watching you blow some hottie is the anti-viagra. Come on, people, learn the rules or be taught! All this can be done, with a little finesse and sophistication.

Now, onto the sorrows of the femmes of Gridr:

…

From the article: “Bi discreet six ft 32 white musc lkng for same to stroke maybe I blow you, laid back normal fun time..no weirdos fat or femme, be over 5’8 and hit me up with info.”

Still, I can’t help but feel a little queasy when I read all of the postings that specify “masc, no femmes please” because there are a lot of them. And maybe it wouldn’t make me feel so bad if I didn’t still live in a culture that celebrated straight-acting gay men and see so many of my gay friends act ashamed when they do something that’s considered stereotypically feminine.”

Homo: you would think, by the persistence of this “femme” meme, that it was the central issues of gay life today, and perhaps it is, for the gays. We have more pressing issues, more on that below. How we treat one another in everyday life is the addition that eventually sums up any community, so this is not an unimportant issue. We should be civil, but this does not require loving or even liking one another just because someone has a rainbow flag sticker on their car. So much for the gay “community”, such as it is.

Sex, desire and pleasure are a different country, or at least a different realm. Sure, socially constructed, but we believe sex forms the deep dark foundations of a person’s being (as opposed to the upper floors where politics take place). What we want for sex often bespeaks our deepest longings and fantasies about life, superficial political slogans float helplessly at the surface above these depths.

“Submissive masculine ‘son’ wanted for rough sex by discreet muscle bear dad.” is a haiku of concentrated and deep longing: for fatherhood, intimacy, domination, death. In our view, chirping that this and that is not “politically correct” is so misplaced as to be unhinged. These issues are not really to be debated with, they are the grounding of a person’s life and far downstream from a gay political rally. Sure, fight patriarchy on a societal level, maybe eventually a dent will be made, but hectoring in the bedroom makes you no better than the fundamentalist religious nut forcing their version of sexuality on free people. Such is the nature of freedom: people will defy you and for reasons that are not always as stupid and evil as the religionists, whether of the Queer Church or the Evangelical camp, believe.

It’s popular at the moment to bash “masculine” gay men, so a few thoughts. These earnest bashers don’t seem to understand the enormous subversiveness of the “masculine fag”. What could be more undermining to patriarchy than a “real man” who prefers to take it up the ass? Who wants cock and not pussy. That all this is an elaborate performance seems to be lost on these folks, Never mind the themes and meanings of “camping” the masculine. That these men are not aware of this performance going on only makes it more delicious, a “real” drag show.

As to the “femme” gay guys pissed off at the Grindr bully. It’s interesting that this camp often imply that they are the “natural” way to be, the real fags, who have, because of their suffering somehow redeemed the rest. This nonsense narrative passes for truth in many minds today. The truth, if that word can even be applied, is much more complex and interesting. While bashing the masculine is accepted (after all they are associated with patriarchy and so fair game), reflecting on the construction of the “femme” identity, we are meant to all suddenly go hushed and shamanistic. That some men, again because of tectonic social forces, have an identity construct using elements of the “feminine” is what happens here. What if that “butch” guy doesn’t like me for who I am? There are thousands of responses to this, but finally we end up with the nature of longing and desire. Despite fairy tales, no one gets exactly what we want in life. In fact, life if often just that, a merry chase to no where. Desire do not know justice and never will.

Homosexual young people are like shipwrecked sailors (no, perv, get that image out of your head, now!), they must use whatever flotsam and jetsam they find to hobble together a craft that gets them home. What is amazing is the wonderful job they do! The fact is, they “look” (with an deep inner gaze, of course) at the terrain they find themselves in, “since I love daddy and he loves mommie and mommie is pretty and feminine, ergo…) This is neither good nor bad, it just is. What’s more important is this is very deep and wrapped up with a person’s core, we believe more than is popularly held at the moment. A young tree finds itself in a storm that blows is over a few centimetres, eventually that tree will be skewed by meters. You are not going to make anyone like strawberry ice cream by sending them to a farm to pick strawberries (or working in an ice cream factory for the summer.) We like what we like (and who we like) for deep-seated reasons that we ourselves often find difficult to access. Can anyone imagine this conversation happening in the lesbian community? Prescribing someone else’s desires? Recently a drag performer of note hurled at an audience composed of many gay beards, “you all have daddy issues!”. The audience just laughed at the intended insult, “duh-huh”. And lesbians have mommie issues, and so on. “So, what?” Yes, Andy, we agree. Everyone is trying to work out in the mystery of connection and identification, not just trans people.

All these issues are interesting and discussable. We should bring them up with our respective fag hags after a night of man-sex, but in a more profound and honest way than this article purports. Some would say this polemic is disrespectful. We disagree. Spirited conversations are the only way we learn. This is a considered response to the superficial, silly, sloppy (and sadly, typical) article from Vice. That is what we consider to be disrespectful. The writer didn’t care enough to think hard about an essential issue. Repackaging a few “of the moment” received ideas is not good enough! We believe that homosexuals can handle satire, critique and some intellectual “rough play”. Indeed, that this is essential and salutary, given the slack and anodyne nature of what passes for thinking today in homosexual public life.

Such a fucking pretty boy. We know, the lipstick is meant to be drag, der, but it’s gilding the lily in a telling way. That’s what Michelangelo liked, basically pretty gym boys (and we must assume dumb, did they ever come any other way?). He stands there at the Academia in Florence, all passive and just “look at my abs, they speak for themselves, eh? He could never have slain a giant muscle bear like Goliath. That David’s muscles are peacock’s feathers.

As Davids go, we vastly prefer Bernini’s avid study in determination. The legend goes that this face was a self-portrait of the artist while completing this self same masterpiece. Defiance and determination personified and immortalised at the Borghese. Put glasses on that face and we would cum in our pants.

From an article in the Style Section (no, not even WE could not make...

Don’t Fear The Reaper

From an article in the Style Section (no, not even WE could not make that one up) of the New York Times, we read “At around 4 on a Saturday morning, a time when most of the gay bars in New York have closed and locked their doors, a steady stream of young and middle-aged men, almost all shirtless and some stripped down to their boxer briefs, have found their way down a dark stairwell and into a maze of basement rooms, where the décor can best be described as fallout-shelter chic.

They have come to Paddles, an after-hours sex club in Chelsea, not yet ready to end their evening. They prowl the long cinder-block hallway, exchanging knowing glances. A husky, bearded man in his 40s lounges on a corrugated black rubber bench, admiring a chorus line of smooth-chested 20-somethings, their flesh glowing under a pink neon sign and black lights. A man in a metal-studded black leather chest harness strides toward a back room, the hookup room, where a circle of men, skin glistening with sweat, hover around a swing, watching.

Then, in walks a skinny man in a black baseball cap, with soulful eyes and a nose that juts forward like the prow of a ship. He stops at a folding table set up between two video screens showing continuous reels of gay pornography. He strips off his black leather jacket, flexing toned biceps in a black muscle shirt. He sets up a red hazardous-waste bin as nonchalantly as if it were a plastic juice jug from Costco, arranges some Band-Aids and a bowl of lollipops next to it, and pulls out a syringe.

This is Demetre Daskalakis, a doctor and gay activist who has come to spread the message that a new health threat has emerged among the city’s gay population and that he is there to stop it.

“Have you been vaccinated?” he asks, smiling, his voice warm, as the half-naked men walk by.

Read the rest here, then come back.

Homo: Oh, how we love to hate the New York Times! They just make it so easy! We know, but most good people do. Let’s proceed to more controversial issues. First, our position on this map: like all sane and sensible homos, we are concerned about STDs. While they are certainly not the focus of our lives, we act reasonably and decently toward the care of our own health and the health of others. At the same time, we are aware of the power of the victimology and death-cults in gay life, whose relentless message is “the Life is an ante-room to the hospital”. We are tired of and bored by these pseudo-Judeo-Christian memes and we leave them to the stylings of the Sob Sister Chorus of the Rainbow Coalition. We, for our humble part have a different cult in mind. We strongly embrace the lusty throbbing dripping pulsating lifestyle of cock worship. Yes, once in a while something unpleasant WILL get stuck in your teeth (and qweens if its your teeth, consider yourself a lucky lad).

We do not buy the idea that this Times article is really about public health, a strain of meningitis that has affected a population of individuals. It’s troubling subtext is much more important: be afraid of sex, especially gay sex which is clearly tied to pathology if not a pathology in and of itself. Medicine is your only hope, so run to the Wizard-doctors and they’ll save your promiscuous asses. Of course, we do accept that addiction and disease are sad facts of modern life (and naturally not just homolife: go to any (no, better, all) McDonald’s in America and set up your fucking medical tables, long term, stopping that “restaurant” cum toxic waste dumping station would save the health of more individuals (and yes, even more gays) than hectoring gay sex! Go on, write that up, NY Fucking Times. Oh, yah, we forgot, that pesky corporate indentured servitude of yours, tsss.)

Let’s get this straight: NO, this is not HIV/AIDS II. No possible way, look at the medical facts to clear that up. Behind this demeaning and insidious plague nostalgia, this ghoulish tourism, is something even more treacherous: the strong drive in the piece to not so subtly medicalize and pathologize homosex, with an end to judge it as flawed, wrap it up as you might a biohazard and finally quarantine it in a vault like some rare disease.

Transform a sex club into a medical ward! Perfect. How very sexy! Genius, brava, the NYT’s and their ilk could transform Renaissance Rome into Scarsdale on a Tuesday night at eleven (a deadly boring suburb of NY where many Times drones aspire to “live”, read: exist, still deeper read: be allowed to be their “dead inside” selves while appearing to be alive in stultifying Augustinian peace). We’re not even that this effort is not a good idea from a medical point of view, but there are many layers to this story and the Times, that old Upper West Side bitch that she is, can insinuate with the best of us. Would the Empress of Gray run an article on “Paddles” to celebrate the place? Ever? Of course, the Times is not the only source of this dreck. As you may know, that paper is never the origin of anything fresh. This sentiment comes from a larger cultural context based on some unpleasantnesses from the past (yes, gallows understatement intended).

To lighten things up. A little thought experiment: Let’s consider childbirth to be pathological (yes, we actually do, but we’re talking about “Normal” people, whoever they are) If one did, one would see breeding (yes, their kind, not ours) causes more medical problems and complications than HIV/AIDS ever will. (Nevermind the fact that this “condition” is leading us quickly to the brink of environmental destruction.) We must think hard here about power and the ideas behind it. This control of teleology (where ideas come from and lead us), something that is utterly lost on the ADHD fag “leaders” and something the disengaged gay “intelligentsia” won’t touch, with a few exceptions. This is why articles like this pass without notice, but they are stealth polemics and need answering (or at least questioning!).

Of course, what is most interesting here is The Great Unstated, the Moose on the Table. It goes something like this: “Why, these bad/misguided/ill men should be home in their good marriage beds with their husbands and rescued dogs and adopted children that WE have worked so hard to grant them with vision of IKEA dancing in their heads! These slimy creeps must be sick in body and mind to want to prowl the deep night! Risking their lives and the lives of others! Vampires! Zombies! (I’m scared, let’s get out of here, Skip!) Fucking raising MY health insurance payments for their sick addictions that lead to nothing but a moment’s gooey release! Tawdry! Sex with strangers? Are you people insane? What kind of a freak would want that, when we all know (because the NY Times tells us) even a kiss and a cuddle can kill, kill, kill! Fear the gay reaper! He’s that ghostly clone lurking in the video booth! Patient 0.2, lying in wait to destroy your life.”(reedy voiced inner dialog of Times dweeb reading the Times article: “OMFG! Like I am like a finalist to be, like, an intern at MOMA and I’m am so not throwing away that future in a brownstone with my future hunk-band for some cheap gay death-sex with some DILF ghost-clone. No matter how much fun it might be!” (Homo (hissing): “Jaysus-god. Yes, heterogays, you are a herd of mentally retarded sheep.)

The stunning reality is, this simple-minded fear mongering using these vile subtexts and barbed memes works. Perhaps by is pure relentlessness. The utter domestication of gay men, at least on the surface, has been more successful than any Five Year Plan of Joe or Mao ever was. It’s been accomplished, in part, using articles like this Times hack. (If you want the masters of this Pravda-style of puritanical anti-Homo political correctness, look at our nemesis, The Good Men Project (aka The Utterly Henpecked Metrosexual and Ho-hos Who Date Their Faghags Project). And, yes, that does make us the Bad (-ass, or at the very least, often naughty, very much in our own minds) (Homo=) Man Project and this is a moniker we don’t mind in the least) The confidence with which these lemmings chirp in unison is built on the cowardly impunity of bourgeois conformity, “all good, sane fags would agree that…” Who would dare to stand up and defend hedonism after the catastrophe of the HIV/AIDS-Sodom/Gomorrah? Who? Who would face scary Jehovah’s (played very convincingly by Larry Kramer) mighty wrrrrraaath? Who would deny that it is meet and just to have the Scarlet A forever emblazoned on our chests? (Albeit in the Hester tradition: that emblem of shame on a stylish Prada dinner jacket.) Who would dare?

We would.

We deny and denounce efforts at pathologizing or medicalising the way we choose to live. Period. (the subtle subtext from us, if you don’t get it, is a thousand “fuck yous” to people who would hinder our desires.) We refuse to be shamed for cruising! We celebrate the tradition of man-hunting, and think it’s one of the wonders of homo life, a unique traditional practice of our tribe, whether at the Tuileries at midnight or on Grindr at three in Flagstaff. Auden, one of us, or perhaps we should say, one of our fathers, describe the frisson well when he wrote,

It was a spring day, a day for a lay, when the air
Smelled like a locker-room, a day to blow or get blown;
Returning from lunch I turned my corner and there
On a near-by stoop I saw him standing alone.

I glanced as I advanced. The clean white T-shirt outlined
A forceful torso, the light-blue denims divulged
Much. I observed the snug curves where they hugged the behind,
I watched the crotch where the cloth intriguingly bulged.

Our eyes met. I felt sick. My knees turned weak.
I couldn’t move. I didn’t know what to say.
In a blur I heard words, myself like a stranger speak
“Will you come to my room?” Then a husky voice, “O.K.”

(Read the wonderful rest of the poem here)

For us, the thrill and fun of the chase is almost ineffable. We love initiating the novice to the rules of this game. Gays, poor gelded dears, let’s try to help you frame it: think of the fun you’ll have shopping for that perfect crystal punch-bowl for your nuptial banquet: it’s kinda like that, but one thousand times more enjoyable, involves a Russian sailor, bushes, splooge and is lot cheaper. Does that picture help?

In this slutty romp, men from all kinds of backgrounds and points of view mix and grapple, if for a few minutes, in the carnal embrace or in a chat-room, we believe adds to a richer life for us. It’s not just exchanging spit and sperm, but often trading ideas, affection and a laugh. It’s a giant, secretive, backstage demimonde that defies easy analysis or encapsulation and that is a good thing. This may scare some who think it dangerous. And that’s the thing, it is. It’s risky and not for the feint-hearted. It’s also inherently destabilising. More to the good, we say, but many disagree. Try as they might, they’ll never lock us (all) up in their malls and churches, hectored by gloomy old wives’ tales of doom and damnation. We’ll not submit. Their ways are not ours and they are strangers to our ways. That is as it should be.

We remain staunch Whitmanites and are ever moved by the Master when he distills the core pleasure of our city hunting,

“STRANGER! if you, passing, meet me, and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me?

And why should I not speak to you?”
